Where Is My Mother • 1926

WhereIsMyMother

That mother of mine, how it tore my heart
To leave her across the sea,
I who was part of her –
She became all of me –
O, God, how could I speak?

I grew in her love, in her tenderness,
But now an ocean does part –
At midnight there, my mother looked in on me,
But here the sun’s gone high,
And my heart is heavy.
Oh mother! Could I be free?

I dreamed that I could bring her close,
Created the painter’s art
On the canvas
Mother looking out of the door,
By the mountain road a cart,
A plane in the air,
The ship on the sea,
Could I find my mother again?
